Walking In The Light - My Personal Revelation

Today my spiritual eyes were opened to a new understanding, both freeing and challenging. It is recognition of a truth I had not before seen. It combines a passage from Luke's gospel with a letter written by Paul to the Romans. Here they are:

Jesus speaking: Luke 11:11-13 [NASB]
"Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him ?"

Romans 7;14-25 [NASB]
"For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

I have read both of these passages man times since I was born again in 1976 at age 39. Over the years I have waged the same war as Paul describes. In recent years I have asked the Lord for a more generous filling of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus speaking: Matthew 13:12-13 [NASB] "For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand."

Slowly, slowwwwly, I have become aware of His constant presence and His guidance nudging, sometimes urging, me in certain directions. I am writing this here and now because of what HE showed me. It is this:

I, like all humans, am inherently and innately evil. This comes courtesy of Adam's sin. We are all infected with it. It is at once both depressing and uplifting. To be shown that I am unable to alter my nature means I can never reach the goal of being like sinless Jesus. He was born of woman, yet not of man, but rather of God's Holy Spirit. I could say He had a great advantage over me in life on earth.

The Spirit God put into Adam died in the moment of disobedience spawned by disbelief. We all have inherited that dead spirit.

Romans 5:8 [NASB]
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

The Son of God incarnate came with the message of God's kingdom and salvation. The flesh cannot be redeemed. It is perishable. This is why we who are saved will be given new bodies in the new cosmos God has planned.

Philippians 3:20-21 [NASB]
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Revelation 1:12-15 [NASB]
Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash. His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.

When we get our new bodies we will no longer be the carnal beings we now are. Praise God!

Until that time, God has provided a means of redemption for our dead spirits by sending Jesus to explain to us that belief is the antidote to the poison within us. [John 3:16-18; John 5:24].

Meanwhile, I (like you) am stuck in this body with is needs and wants. The flesh does not truly know good and evil. I offer as evidence the behaviors and activities of hundreds of millions of human beings on earth who think the way they live is just fine on their own scale of morality. But the Spirit knows.

Fortunately for me (and you if you're saved), God has chosen to clothe us in righteousness because of what Jesus Christ has done if we believe and profess that He is the Son of God, Messiah, Savior, who gave His human life for our sins.

So. Being already in the kingdom and possessing eternal life of my spirit, how shall I live out my days in the flesh. I am living under Grace, not Law. Arguably, this means that nothing I do, or fail to do, can abrogate my eternal salvation. Therefore, I am free from the law and can yield to my fleshly desires. Like Paul, a wretch, unable to keep all the commands and teachings of Jesus in the gospels and the Father in the Old Testament given to the Hebrews.

The longer I walk in the Light of the Spirit, the more obvious it is to me that my life has been filled with sins of commission and omission.

Jesus speaking: John 3:17-21 [NASB]
For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."

I came into the light and, just as He said, my deeds were exposed. Now I struggle to perform different deeds from those I did in the past. Now, though I have been freed to do as I please according to my flesh, I am indeed at war within myself. I can say with some satisfaction that His side is winning. The Holy Spirit is ever present giving me guidance in even to smallest, seemingly inconsequential, situations.

What He has impressed upon most strongly is to strive to uphold the commandments as Jesus Himself interpreted them:

Jesus speaking: Matthew 22:37-40 [NASB]
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

And to strive to manifest the Fruits of the Spirit Paul enumerated.

Galatians 5:21-22 [NASB]
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

My plan is to endure to the end of my earth life and inherit the kingdom, a joint heir with the Lord Jesus Christ.

I pray as much for you who read this.
