who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her!
How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling."
Matthew 23:37 New American Standard Bible
Picture Jesus speaking to a crowd. He has just finished his diatribe of woes against the hypocrite teachers of the law.
He is impassioned. He cries out in sorrow, lamenting the refusal of the people to turn to and embrace God. He is also speaking in the voice of God the Father who for centuries has lovingly pursued this people. Jesus, in His divine life prior to incarnation, was at the Father's side throughout the centuries of rebellion.
Now, incarnate, He pours out his sadness and longing.
If you have ever been fortunate enough to see a hen gather her chicks you know what a beautiful picture this is. She beckons them with lifted wings. The tiny, defenseless, furry chicks scurry under her wings. She lowers her wings, enfolding them in a snug, safe place close to her heart.
True, if the wolf or fox pounces, it may slay the mother and devour the chicks. That is what can happen in the natural realm. In the spiritual realm it is quite a different story. The protector is invincible God. Your and my spirit beings are His children if we have been born again into His family. The wolf or fox is that old enemy Satan.
Satan cannot pounce on God. He can only get at you when you are outside God's enfolding wings. When you are living in the shelter of God's loving protection, Satan can do no more than run around in circles shouting threats and lies. I am still speaking of the spiritual realm. It is only in the spirit world that we can be completely safe.
The natural world is in upheaval and rebellion against God and will so continue until He calls a halt to it. Satan can attack every aspect of your earthly life... relationships, employment, health, and whatever else makes up your life. But he can do nothing to your soul so long as you are "In Christ", walking in the light the Spirit gives you.
You can not look to any other person's life and compare it to yours. The Holy Spirit guides each believer along a path to paradise according to His omniscient understanding of the believer's needs.
We who believe Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, unlike the children of Jerusalem, ARE willing to be gathered under the protective wings of our loving God and Father.
Accept His offer and remain close to the heart of God.
